How was a dream called My Numis born?

A story of family, coins and never giving up — told in the first person by Fernando.

If you're reading this, before explaining how the My Numis project came about, let me introduce myself so we can get to know each other: I'm Fernando, and I'm delighted that you've come to this page to find out who we are, who we represent and what we're here to do.

There's no point in presenting some mission here about "satisfying the customer to the fullest with an irrevocable commitment to professional integrity", because to me — a straightforward person with a bit of Porto humour (sorry, Lisboners) — that's all "baloney!" and only serves to pad things out.

I prefer a more personal approach because we're all human, and humans build connections. Those matter more than the distance and rigidity a company sometimes shows. Let's get to what matters…

1970

Before explaining how the dream was born, we must go back to the 1970s, when my grandparents, Fernando Ferreira da Silva and Maria Luísa Dias, were already trading stamps and coins in Angola.

1975

With the declaration of Angola's independence, they and my father — still young at the time — returned to Portugal, leaving behind everything they had built. Can you guess how they survived? Yes, precisely by buying and selling stamps and coins. They sold at collectors' fairs, in Praça D. João I in Porto, and others across the country.

1978

They managed to rent a small shop at Rua do Almada 323 and grow the business under the name "Galeria Filatélica e Numismática do Porto", and later produce the now-iconic "Catálogo de Moedas e Notas – Ferreira da Silva" in 1988, now in its 32nd edition!

From the age of 7, as far back as I can remember, I would sit at my tiny hexagonal pine desk, stapling coin flips and sorting coins to place them on trays and sheets. The line between child labour and passing on a legacy is sometimes very thin — luckily I didn't go and file a complaint with the union. 🙂

2000

The years went by and around the 2000s we moved to a larger, more spacious shop. When I got out of school, off I went to the shop to lend a "little hand", because numismatics was booming back then. At 13 I tried to build a website using "FrontPage 2003" — which never left the lab because I had absolutely no knack for it!

As I always played sports — football, futsal, gym, kickboxing, American football — I decided to study Physical Education and Sport at ISMAI, working part-time at the shop. When I finished the degree, I decided to continue the family business and learn the "art" of trading coins. The degree was, and always had been, a Plan B.

2013

With the 2008 crisis still lingering, Rua do Almada had less foot traffic. It was time for a change: we bought a shop on Rua Fernandes Tomás, near Bolhão. My grandparents, now tired, left the business in the hands of my father and me.

2017

In 2016 I must have fallen out of bed and once again decided to build a coin website with online sales (yes, I'm stubborn!). In 2017 the site was live. A MIRACLE! It lasted 12 months… Why? It was hit by viruses! I mourned it and turned to another business while the site lay in a coma.

2018

I was successful in short-term rentals (Alojamento Local) and opened the company My Royal Empire Unipessoal Lda. That allowed me to keep doing what I loved, with the possibility — kept in sight — of My Numis rising like a phoenix. Giving up was not an option.

In 2018/2019 I had some personal problems and took a break to travel around Europe, always with the goal of reviving My Numis. At the end of that year, with my energy recharged, all that was left was to gather the team and get to work!

2020

In the middle of a global pandemic, along comes… My Numis, stronger than ever! Determined to offer collecting supplies, numismatic items, 2-euro coins and coins of the Portuguese Republic, among many others.

My Numis belongs to My Royal Empire Lda and is completely independent from Galeria Numismática do Porto. The path is different even though the blood is the same — and both are here to stay.

This is our story tied to numismatics. Giving up is not an option and, with willpower and passion, anything can be achieved!

As a collector yourself, you can create your own story — with your collections, your way, your style, passing on wisdom to your children and nephews and building new friendships.

On the Internet the world is connected; we don't collect alone. There's a community ready to share experiences, and we're part of it. Visit us on social media — our presence is waiting to hear from you. See you soon and happy collecting!
